THE BRONXBERLINCONNECTION ARRIVES IN NYC (29/02/16)

Nach einem langen Flug und einer wie immer etwas länger andauernden, natürlich rein zufälligen, Befragung der “Schwarzhaarigen” der Gruppe durch die Kolleg*innen des Grenzschutzes (an dieser Stelle danke fürs reinlassen) sind wir endlich in NYC angekommen. In den kommenden Tagen werden wir Photos, Impressionen und mehr zum besten geben….wir haben ein dichtes Programm mit Shows, Workshops, Studio recordings, Videos und Photo Shoots…aber heute beginnen wir mit sight seeing, Ellis Island, World Trade Center und wenn wir es vor unsererm Probetermin heute Abend noch schaffen werden wir bestimmt am Trump Tower vorbei gehen…um “zu winken”

After a long flight and the usual and of course totally coincidental extra questioning of all of the “middle eastern” looking guys from the group by border patrol agents we have finally arrived in NYC. We will share impressions, pictures, thoughts and more in the coming days…we have a busy itinerary full of shows, workshops, studio recordings, video and photoshoots…but today we will begin with the mandatory sight seeing, Ellis Island, World Trade Center and time permitting (before we have to be at our rehearsal tonight) we will swing by Trump tower…to “wave”

DAY 1  (01/03/16)

Der erste Tag in NYC hat nicht enttäuscht…sightseeing bei bestem Wetter und einer nur kurzen Wartezeit zur Ellis Island Ferry…danach World Trade Center etc…Abends hatten wir schließlich unsere erste Generalprobe und schon war der Tag vorbei. Es gibt noch nicht viel anderes zu berichten außer dem das wir in den nächsten Tagen so ein so dicht gepacktes Programm haben das ein nächster Post etwas auf sich warten lassen könnte…Heute gehts zuerst zur Fordham University und unserem Freund Prof Mark Naison aka the Notorious PhD zu einer Diskusion rund um Malcolm X and the civil rights struggle, nach einem gemeinsamen Pizza Essen mit Studenten dann eine kurze Pause für einen gemeinsamen Rundgang durch die BX und heute Abend dann die erste Show @ Cafe Rodriguez auf dem Fordham Campus in der Bronx…Morgen früh gehts gleich weiter nach Harlem zu einem Treffen mit der Zulu Nation und einem Gespräch über Polizei Gewalt in NYC und was dagegen getan wird…abends dann die BronxBerlinConnection show am Goethe Institut in NYC….und dann irgendwann ist wieder etwas Zeit Neuigkeiten zu posten

The first day in NYC did not disappoint…sightseeing in great wether and the shortest wait ever for the Ellis Island ferry…after that it was on to the World Trade Center etc….in the evening we had our first rehearsal and that´s how fast the first day was over. We don´t have that much to share yet other than the fact that we have a very busy itinerary for the next couple of days so that our next update might take a little while…Today we are going to visit our friend Prof. Mark Naison aka the Notorious PhD at Fordham University in the Bronx for a discussion on Malcolm X and the civil rights struggle, after pizza with the students we will have a short break in order to take a walk through the communities close to Fordham in the Bronx und tonight we will be playing our first show at Cafe Rodriguez on the Fordham Campus…Tommorrow morning we will be headed to Harlem for a meeting with people from the Zulu Nation and a discussion on police brutality and what is being done against it…In the evening we will play a BronxBerlinConnection special show at the Goethe Insitut in NYC….and at some point after that there will be time to post an update

DAY 2 (02/03/16)

Der gestrige zweite Tag der BronxBerlinConnection brachte uns in die Bronx und an die Fordham University zu unserem Freund und Gründungsmitglied Dr. Mark Naison aka Notorious PhD. Wir nahmen am Unterricht in einer seiner Klassen Teil, wo wir eine interessante Diskusion rund um Themen wie Malcolm X, den civil rights stuggle der 60`er Jahre und den derzeitig stattfindenden Wahlkampf in den USA führten…die Gespräche zum Thema Trump und Cruz würden die Kapazitäten meines Blogs sprengen und sind hier nicht wiederzugeben, evtl wird der Dokumentarfilm ein wenig Licht ins Dunkle bringen. Abends dann spielten wir im Cafe Rodriguez auf dem Fordham Campus unser erstes Konzert in intimer Atmosphäre. Ein wirklich gelungener Abend.
Day two of the BronxBerlinConnection took us to the Bronx, to Fordham University and one of our founding fathers, Dr Mark Naison aka Notorious PhD. We participated in one of his classes and very interesting discussions on Malcolm X, the civil rights struggle and the current U.S. elections…the discussions around Trump and Cruz could simply not be captured in any meanigful way by this small blogpost. Therefore i am not going to attempt it…maybe the short documentary we will be producing after the conclusion of our stay will be able to cover it…That same evening we held our first concert at Cafe Rodriguez on the Fordham campus in what can only be described as a wonderful amtosphere. A simply very nice evening!

DAY 3 (03/03/16)

Der dritte Tag brachte uns nach Harlem wo wir uns mit Brother Shep und Dr Shaka Zulu von der Zulu Nation trafen um zunächst das Malcolm X and Dr Betty Shabazz Center zu besuchen und über das Leben und den Tod dieses wunderbaren Mannes und seiner ebenso faszinierenden Frau und Familie zu sprechen. Nach einem gemeinsamen Mittagessen in Jacob´s Soul Food Retaurant das wir nicht nur wegen dem hervorragenden Essen besuchten, sondern auch weil sie jeden Tag Essen für Obdachlose zur Verfügung stellen und weil sie jeden Thanksgiving umsonst für die ganze Gemeinde Kochen…ein Restaurant das wir gerne besuchen…im Anschluss gab es einen Einblick in die für Europäer unvorstellbare Polizei Gewalt die hierzulande immer noch gegen Schwarze ausgeführt wird. Ein Teil des Workshops widmete sich Strategien wie man sich in einer Begegnung mit der NYPD verhalten sollte um zu überleben. Es fiel uns allen sehr schwer zum Ende des Tages wieder zurück in Richtung Lower Manhattan zu fahren wo wir am Abend ein Konzert beim Goethe Institut spielten. Der Abend war gut besucht und hat allen großen Spaß gemacht….ein weiterer toller Tag in NYC!

Our third day took us to Harlem where we met with Brother Shep and Dr Shaka Zulu of the Zulu Nation in order to visit the Malcolm X and Dr Betty Shabazz Center together where we had an opportunity to talk about the life and death of this marvelous man and his amazing wife and family. After lunch at Jacob´s restaurant where we dined not only because of its delicious food but because they provide food for homeless people every day and because they cook for the entire community every Thanksgiving…the kind of restaurant we gladly patronise…next we were able to get some insight into the incredible amount of violence which is still being unleashed on the black community by the Police Department. Part of the workshop covered strategies on how to conduct oneself when encountering the police in order to survive.  It was difficult for us all to head back towards Lower Manhattan at the end of the day where we played a show at the Goethe Institut last night. There was a nice little turn out for this concert and everyone involved seemed to be having a lot of fun…another amazing day in NYC!

DAY 4 & 5  (04+05/03/16)

Der vierte und gnadenlos vollgepackte Tag der BronxBerlinConnection 2016 brachte uns zuerst an die CUNYPREP Schule in der Bronx wo unsere Gruppe einen Workshop anbot und eine Möglichkeit hatte mit anderen jungen Menschen der Community ins Gespräch zu kommen. Pararlel dazu begaben sich andere aus der Gruppe ins Studio um letzte Aufnahmen für den BronxBerlin Song fertig zu stellen da wir an diesem Wochenende das Video dazu drehen werden. Am frühen Abend besuchten wir die “Feel Good Happy Hour”, von unserem guten Freund Farbeon Saucedo und gleich danach ging es weiter zu “The Lesson” einer weiteren Jam Session…Freitag hatte ein Teil der Gruppe zum ersten Mal Zeit auszuschlafen wärend ein anderer Teil der Gruppe sich in Soho mit dem legendären “Crazy Legs”, von der “Rock Steady Crew” zu einem Workshop und Gespräch traf. Abends dann ging es mit der ganzen Gruppe zum gemeinsamen Abendessen nach China Town!

The forth and extremely busy day of the BronxBerlinConnection 2016 took us to the CUNYPREP Community College in the Bronx were our group would have the opportunity to engage into discussions with young people from the area and to lead a workshop. Others simultanusly went to the studio to record the last bars for our BronxBerlin Song, for which we will record a music video this weekend. In the early evening we visited the “Feel Good Happy Hour” by our good friend Farbeon and from there we moved on to “The Lesson”, another jam session…On friday some in the group had the first opportunity to sleep in late while others went to Soho to meet up with legendary “Crazy Legs” of “Rock Steady Crew” for a workshop and a discussion. At night we all went to dinner together in Chinatown!

DAY 6 (06/03/16)

Der sechste Tag der BronxBerlinConnection begann für die weiblichen TN der Gruppe schon sehr früh da sie bereits um 9:30 Uhr zum Soundcheck im Main Theater des Hostos College in der Bronx sein mussten. Dort traten sie später am Nachmittag als Teil eines super talentierten lineups vor mehreren hunderten, feiernden Menschen auf. Moma´s Hip Hop Kitchen all female showcase…tolle Veranstaltung. Nach dem Konzert ging es aus der Bronx nach Brooklyn zu unserem Freund und Gründungsmitglied Dr. Mark Naison aka Notorious PhD wo er uns zusammen mit seiner Frau und einem tollen Buffet samt Wein und Bier (für manche unter uns zu viel davon) empfing.
