SPOKEN WOR:L:DS. Lyrik als Performance zwischen Nairobi und Berlin ist ein Projekt, das die zeitgenössische performative Lyrik im Blick hat. Es greift die Impulse von Lyrik, Spoken Word, Slam Poetry und Rap aus Nairobi auf. Diese Kunstformen mixen Literatur, Musik, Tanz und Visual Arts. In den zahlreichen Veranstaltungen in der kenianischen Metropole fließen Dichtung, Spoken Word und HipHop, Improvisation und Freestyle ineinander: beatboxende Dichter, kompetitive battles und DJs unterstützen hier die PoetInnen bei ihren Performances.
SPOKEN WOR:L:DS nimmt den Reichtum an Stilen, Sprachen und Genres in der zeitgenössischen Lyrikszene Nairobis als Anstoß für Berlin. Hier hat sich ebenfalls eine rege Lyrik-, Spoken Word- und HipHop-Szene herausgebildet, die bereits vielfach international vernetzt ist. Die aktive poetische Begegnung junger, aber auch etablierter KünstlerInnen aus Nairobi und Berlin wird die in Ostafrika sehr präsente Form der performativen Lyrik mit aktuellen Tendenzen der deutschsprachigen Lyrikszene verbinden und konfrontieren, so dass neue literarische Formen daraus entstehen.Kulturelle Bildung
Viele der beteiligten KünstlerInnen sind aktiv in der kulturellen und politischen Bildung sowie in der Sozialarbeit engagiert. Sowohl in Nairobi als auch in Berlin, ist dieses Engagement oft selbstverständlicher Bestandteil ihrer Arbeit. Vor allem Rap spricht Jugendliche an, die sich sonst vielleicht wenig mit klassischer Literatur beschäftigen. Es wird daher Workshops mit Jugendlichen aus Nairobi geben, die auf die Berliner KünstlerInnen treffen und unter Anleitung des Teams gemeinsam ihre Poesie performen. Die jugendlichen TeilnehmerInnen sind Teil der jeweiligen Künstlerdelegation und wirken bei den öffentlichen Veranstaltungen mit.

Workshops
Im Projekt geht es um den Austausch performativer Lyrik und das gegenseitige Übersetzen, Aufnehmen, Adaptieren, Miteinander arbeiten und den Austausch. Um an den sehr unterschiedlichen Themen, am Umgang mit Worten, Inhalten und Klängen zu arbeiten, treffen jeweils acht AutorInnen bzw. KünstlerInnen aus Nairobi und Berlin in intensiven Workshops aufeinander. Jeweils zwei der TeilnehmerInnen sind LyrikerInnen, zwei Spoken Word KünstlerInnen, zwei RapperInnen und zwei Jugendliche.
SPOKEN WOR:L:DS hat ein genreübegreifendes Übersetzen zum Ziel: Musiker werden sich direkt mit Texten von Dichtern auseinandersetzen und sie ggf. in ihre Kunstform übertragen, und Dichter werden ggf. auf der Grundlage von Rap-Lyrics Gedichte anfertigen.

Öffentliche Veranstaltungen
Das Publikum wird in öffentlichen Konzerten, Lesungen, Performances und Diskussionsveranstaltungen in Nairobi (9.-15.11.2013) und Berlin (voraussichtlich 5.-12.4.2014) nicht nur Einblicke in die Lyrik-, Spoken Word- und Musikszenen der anderen Kulturkreise gewinnen. Es wird darüber hinaus Zeuge kulturellen Transfers und genreübergreifenden Austauschs: Kenianische Gedichte werden zu deutschen Rap-Lyrics und deutsche Spoken Word-Gedichte werden zu kenianischen Gedichten oder Rap-Lyrics. Das Publikum erlebt die Kraft der Literatur, der Sprache und der Musik.

CD/Online Publikation
Eine CD-Publikation mit Studioaufnahmen aller beteiligten kenianischen und deutschen KünstlerInnen sowie Veröffentlichungen auf den bereits bestehenden Internet-Plattformen von www.kwani.org und www.lyrikline.org ist geplant.

Dokumentation
Aus Berlin wird der Kameramann, Filmmacher und Produzent Akira/Citénoir mitreisen, um das Projekt filmisch festzuhalten. Er wird auch im vorab bereits die vorbereitenden Treffen in Berlin dokumentieren, um daraus ein größeres Gesamtbild zeichnen zu können. Die Dokumentation wird der CD beigefügt.

SPOKEN WOR:L:DS. Performance Poetry. A project between Nairobi and Berlin is an international exchange literature project between the cities of Nairobi and Berlin with a focus on contemporary performance poetry. It takes up impulses of Swahili poetry, Spoken Word, Slam Poetry and Rap from Nairobi. These art forms mix literature, music, dance and visual arts. The numerous events in the Kenyan capital are combining Spoken Word and HipHop, improvisation and freestyle: beatboxers, poets, competitive battles and DJs support the performing poets.
SPOKEN WOR:L:DS takes up the variety of styles, languages and genres within the contemporary poetry scene of Nairobi as an impulse for Berlin where an internationally connected, active poetry-, Spoken Word- and HipHop-Scene has developed as well. The project initiates active poetic encounters of up and coming, as well as established artists from Nairobi and Berlin. Styles of performance poetry in East Africa connect with and confront current trends and developments within the German speaking poetry scene generating new forms of literature in the process.

Education
Many of the artists involved in our project are part of educational, cultural or social youth projects. In Nairobi and Berlin this kind of activism is an integral part of their work. Above all it is rap that encourages young people to deal with literature, a genre that seems to be far removed from their lives. In Nairobi (and vice versa in Berlin) young people from local neighborhoods will meet artists from Berlin in workshops. Together, they will perform their poetry and exchange and debate the contents and forms of their lyrics. Participating youths are officially part of the artistic delegation from each city and as such they will perform at the envisioned public events as well.

Workshops
The project realizes the exchange of performance poetry and its mutual translation, adaptation, collaboration and exchange. In order to work on different subject matters and on the different ways of dealing with language and sounds, eight artists from each city will meet each other within intensive workshop settings. Both delegations (to Nairobi/to Berlin) will be made up of two participants per genre (Poetry, Spoken Word, MC´s and in addition two youths). They will prepare for the encounter on the basis of lyrics and/or performance videos and they will ‘translate’ each other’s works mutually. ‘Translation’ is regarded as a wide concept and can also be a performative adaptation, a new text on the basis of another or a spontaneous reaction to a performance. Transcribing one’s own text and sending it to a colleague in Nairobi or Berlin might be already an act of translation. The visit to Nairobi and Berlin will introduce the artists to the performance poetry of these two cities and in the process enable them to communicate about contents and styles and thus it will contribute to a further joint artistic development for all participants. SPOKEN WOR:LD:S aims at translation across genres: there will be musicians dealing with lyrics of poets while transforming them into their art form, poets will be confronted with Rap-Lyrics. It is very important for the German artists to witness the Kenyan scene and vice versa – cultural contexts need not be explained, they need to be experienced.

Public events
Concerts, readings, performances and debates open to the public are taking place in Nairobi (November 9th-15th 2013) and Berlin (April 5th-12th 2014). They will not only offer insights into the Poetry, Spoken Word- and music scenes of another cultural sphere but the audience will be witnessing a cultural transfer and an exchange across genres. Kenyan poetry will be transformed into German Rap and German Spoken Word-poetry will be turned into Kenyan poetry or Rap-Lyrics. The audience will experience the powerful energy of literature, language and music.

CD/Online Publication
The project will produce a CD of studio recordings with all participating artist from Kenya and Germany. Poetry and performances will also be published online at the web domains of www.kwani.org and www.lyrikline.org.

Documentation
The filmmaker and producer Akira/Citénoir will be part of the Berlin group to document the project. He will also be part of the preparatory Berlin based artist workshops. His documentary film will be part of the CD.
